Introducing the 'CanCard' in the U.K.

A new initiative supported by MPs, the Police and Doctors will see the introduction of a new cannabis medical card. From November 1st 2020 CanCard will be made available to UK Cannabis consumers to protect them from arrest and prosecution in the UK.

CanCard is backed by representatives from the Police Federation, LEAP UK, Labour Drug Reform Group, Conservative Drug Policy Reform Group, the Green Party along with many others.

Millions of people in the UK are likely to be eligible for CanCard and you can already register an interest on their website CanCard.co.uk. The list of conditions that will be covered by CanCard will grow over time but will include patients with cancer, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and depression.

CanCard is a holographic photo ID that aims to bring benefits to both patients and the police. Reducing stress levels in medical cannabis users who fear arrest or prosecution while also saving time for police when they are unable to verify genuine medical users.

More Than One Million UK Adults Eligible for New Medical Cannabis Card

The card will prevent medical Cannabis users from being issued with a fine or any prison time for buying cannabis on the black market.

Since medicinal Cannabis was legalised in November 2018 only two drugs Epidiolex and Sativex have been made available on the NHS and the total prescriptions offered to patients is thought to be less than 100.

All other Cannabis derived medicines must be prescribed by specialist private doctors which have been pricing out many consumers and forcing them to use the black market to source their medicinal cannabis.

CanCard will be available to patients who have had a diagnosis confirmed by their GP that is being prescribed for privately, have tried or discussed using other types of prescription medication, are unable to afford a private prescription, need a small amount of cannabis in order to manage their symptoms and are at risk of prosecution.

This might seem like a long list of requirements and the law hasn’t been changed in any way but it is definitely a step in the right direction to helping patients who are using cannabis as medicine.
